I fell into the alternative medicine business, strangely enough, through a dear friend’s mother, Brenda, who was diagnosed with breast cancer and was given six months to live. John and I were like brothers, so when Brenda got diagnosed, it greatly affected me as well. She was sent home from MD Anderson with no real option of care left.
Around this time, I watched a 60 Minutes episode that spotlighted an alternative cancer treatment center in Mexico called Oasis of Hope. I mentioned this clinic to John and Brenda, and they immediately contacted them. She made arrangements to start treatment at Oasis of Hope, and I came along to support my extended family.
During Brenda’s care at the clinic, we got to know the doctors, nurses, and administrative staff. They offered their patients a positive outlook on life, encouragement to live to fight and beat the cancer battle, and this was all so inspiring. While she was getting treatment, I had many conversations with patients in the IV rooms during the day. Although everyone was happy to be there, the common complaint was about the upfront cost of care and disappointment at being unable to utilize their insurance policies for their treatment in Mexico. During one of those conversations, I saw an opportunity to start an advocacy/billing company that could help these patients secure reimbursements for their care.
AMHA Advocacy was born out of a desire to help patients and their families prepare, navigate, and collect insurance reimbursements for treatments at alternative and integrative clinics around the world.
Twenty-five years later, I am still fighting the good fight on their behalf.
Recently, I was diagnosed with Squamous cell carcinoma of the throat. I find myself in a position I thought I would never be. Yet, I am here and I am fighting everyday to beat this disease. Upon my diagnosis, I went to Mexico to receive care at a clinic, I am forever grateful for the treatment I received. I will continue to fight the good fight, now from a more empathic position as I truly know what many of you are going through.
As for my friends mother, she is in her late 70’s now and healthy and Cancer free… We will win this battle, never lose hope and faith!
